The Washingtonia palm is a hardy woody plant from the Palm family that can withstand even short periods of frost. The palm tree received its name in honor of US President George Washington. Under natural conditions it grows mainly in North America. Breeders domesticated the crop not so long ago, but have already developed several hybrids and new varieties.
The plant is a tall tree with a lush crown. Indoor palms are usually modest in size, but in the wild, Washingtonia palms reach 25 m in height. Dense leaf plates in the shape of a fan are formed at the top. The petioles with spines are directed towards the trunk and reach one and a half meters in length. At home, you don’t have to wait for flowering. The trunk is covered with parts of withered foliage.
The basal neck is located in the region of the adventitious roots. During flowering, bisexual flowers appear, which will delight the gardener for a long time. Dark fruits are formed in the inflorescences. To see the flowers, you will need your own greenhouse or a special terrarium. The palm tree is considered a “fan” palm; old leaves may not fall off for a long time and form a “skirt” around the trunk. The seeds of the plant quickly become woody, and they are also a treat for birds. In the United States and Mexico, leaf fibers are used in light industry and for basket weaving. In European countries, the palm tree grows in Greece, Turkey and other Mediterranean countries. The local climate is suitable for the palm tree and it readily blooms during the active growing season.
Before buying indoor exotic palm trees and other flowers in Krivoy Rog, it is better to familiarize yourself with the basic rules for caring for them. The plant needs large spaces and coolness. In a small apartment, the palm tree will be cramped; you cannot place the plant near the air conditioner and heating appliances. Ideally, move Washingtonia outdoors when the plant reaches maturity. Previously, Washingtonia was used for landscaping only in the state of Florida, but today this exotic plant can be seen in parks around the world. Only young specimens are used in the design so that they do not tower over other flowers. On a balcony or in a garden, a palm tree can bloom for years if you care for it well.
