The scientific research of the laboratory is conducted in the following directions:
•Preservation of species available in the collection;
• Creation of a genbank and living collection of wild plant species of Uzbekistan with medicinal and economic value, used in traditional medicine and scientific medicine;
• Phenological studies on the growth and development of newly introduced promising medicinal plants under the conditions of the botanical garden, as well as anatomical studies of some species;
• Practical work on the establishment of a pharmaceutical garden.
Laboratory of Medicinal Plant Introduction
Between 1950 and 1965, under the leadership of academician F.N. Rusanov, plants from almost all floristic regions of the Earth were collected and samples were prepared. In 1951, an experimental field of useful plants was created on the present territory of the Tashkent Botanical Garden, where a collection of 170 species of medicinal plants was cultivated. Research on their initial introduction was conducted by K.H. Khodzhayev and K.Kh. Kholmatov (1963, 1965) conducted scientific work on the cultivation of medicinal plants from the collection and the agrotechnical measures applied to them.
In 1970, the Laboratory of Medicinal Plant Introduction was established. In subsequent years, the medicinal plant collection was expanded to 400 species, with plants mainly brought from various floristic regions of the world. In the laboratory area, the plants were divided into various groups for cultivation: from Europe, the Mediterranean, Central Asia, the Far East, America, tropical and subtropical regions, as well as collections of vitamin-rich plants, essential oil rose varieties, Aronia, and other trees and shrubs.
Since 1974, laboratory staff (Yu.M. Murdakhayev, T.S. Safarov) have carried out the first agricultural contract to study the possibilities of cultivating medicinal plants in the middle mountain regions of the southwest Tian Shan. This date marks the beginning of the development of a new branch of agriculture in the Republic of Uzbekistan – medicinal plant cultivation.
Between 1976 and 1990, extensive geographical tests were conducted on the cultivation of 50 promising species, forms, and varieties of medicinal plants in irrigated areas throughout the republic (Yu.M. Murdakhayev, E.I. Girshevich, T. Safarov). Of these, 35 species, forms, and varieties passed successful tests; initial seeds, planting materials, and recommendations were prepared and provided to specialized farms for use.
For example, Yu.M. Murdakhayev (1974-1990) introduced species such as Nymphaeaceae DC., Nelumbonaceae A.Rich., Trapa L., Mentha L., Brasenia schreberi J.F.Gmel., Styphnolobium japonicum (L.) Schott, Orthosiphon aristatus var. aristatus, Solanum laciniatum Aiton, Leuzea carthamoides (Willd.) DC., Mandragora turcomanica Mizgir., Aerva lanata (L.) Kuntze, and others. Seasonal development of medicinal plants from the East Asian flora under different conditions (shaded and sunny exposures, irrigation amounts) was studied. T.S. Safarov (1982) focused on the introduction of several medicinal tree and shrub species found in the middle mountain regions of southwestern Tian Shan. N.A. Toshmatova (1975) studied the introduction of Hyssopus L. species, O.A. Titova (1988) introduced 40 species of Eremurus M. B., Allium L., Crocus L., Juno Tratt., Asparagus L., and T.T. Tursunov (1987) scientifically analyzed the changes in the growth and development of Sophora korolkovii Koehne under introduction conditions.
Based on long-term experiments, the introduction and competitiveness of 325 species of medicinal plants cultivated under various conditions, grouped by their habitat, ecological-geographical characteristics, and life forms, were evaluated. The study identified limiting environmental factors and positive and negative relationships between phenophases during cultivation, and cultivation technologies were developed.
B.Yo. To‘xtayev (1995-2009) studied the introduction of 111 species of perennial and biennial medicinal plants from 37 families and 90 genera into saline soils at the Tashkent Botanical Garden. The results indicated that 69 species were successful in germination and growth. Of these, 31.5% did not survive during the vegetation period, while 72 species were successfully introduced from seeds, with 66.7% survival. 39 species were vegetatively propagated, with a survival rate of 64.1%.
E.E. Abdinazarov (2009) conducted studies on the Valeriana officinalis species, investigating its ontogenesis, morphological and bioecological characteristics, seasonal development patterns, seed yield, water regime, propagation methods, and chemical composition, and developed agro-technical recommendations for sowing plant seeds.
In addition, F.M. Dusmuratova (2011) compared the morphological and bioecological characteristics of Atropa belladonna under two different (sunny and shaded) exposures at the Tashkent Botanical Garden. The biological processes of flowering, seed yield, and water regime were studied, and the chemical composition of the aboveground part was analyzed, with cultivation methods developed.
A.V. Mahmudov (2017) studied the introduction and bioecological characteristics of the Crocus L. species in Uzbekistan, revealing the ontogenetic stages, growth and development properties, and the seasonal dynamics of flowering of the species under the conditions of Tashkent and Fergana. He found that the seed yield of species C. alatavicus and C. korolkovii varied under different conditions. The phytochemical composition of the aboveground parts of these species was analyzed, and propagation and cultivation methods were developed.
In 2022, within the framework of the state program "Introduction of medicinal plants: replenishment and preservation of the collection and the creation of a genetic bank of economically valuable plant species of the flora of Uzbekistan", the anatomical structure of Hyssopus officinalis L. and Agastache foeniculum (Pursh) Kuntze was studied. It was found that their vegetative organs contain unicellular and multicellular simple trichomes, glandular trichomes with three cells, and essential oil-rich eight-cell trichomes. These plants accumulate biologically active compounds in their leaves and stems, which are used in taxonomic identification and raw material analysis. During the study of the bioecological characteristics of various species, the introduction of medicinal plants such as Ungernia sewerzowii, Mediasia macrophylla, Lagochilus inebrians, and Hippophae rhamnoides revealed that Ungernia sewerzowii adapted well to the soil and climate conditions of Tashkent. The research on its phytocenotic description in the Bostanliq region of Tashkent province demonstrated that the soil cover was 35-50% with dominant species such as Juniperus seravschanica, Prangos pabularia and Salix blakii.
In 2023, the revision of the medicinal plant collection revealed 81 stable species from various geographical regions (North America, Europe, Asia, North Africa). These species showed stability in their growth and adaptability to new climatic and soil conditions, indicating high viability and the ability to self-repair and expand their growing areas.
In 2024, research conducted on the introduction of three medicinal and edible plant species - Curcuma longa, Curcuma zedoaria, and Cyperus esculentus - in open field and container conditions at the Tashkent Botanical Garden showed that Curcuma longa and Curcuma zedoaria are suitable for cultivation only under greenhouse or indoor conditions. On the other hand, Cyperus esculentus easily adapts to new environments and is considered a promising species for Uzbekistan.
It was determined that Ferula tatschikorum plant, specifically the roots of virgin plants aged 6-7 years or older, is suitable for resin collection. The most optimal method for cutting the roots involves making radial transverse cuts, which is recommended for resin extraction in large-scale plantations.
For the first time, the local species Abelmoschus manihot (L.) Medik. and Chamaecrista nomame (Makino) H. Ohashi, which are widely used in Eastern Asian folk medicine, were introduced to the Tashkent Botanical Garden. These species belong to a plant group with long vegetative periods (spring-summer-autumn). Changes in their phenotypic expression in the new environment were found to be related to dry and hot air temperatures. According to literature, in their natural habitat, Abelmoschus manihot flowers from August, but our observations showed that flowering occurred from June until the onset of autumn frosts. The virgin phase of Chamaecrista nomame lasted for a long period, with the plant starting to flower in August and completing its vegetative cycle in October.
The studied species go through the full stages of ontogenetic development, from seed-to-seed production, which will serve as a basis for cultivating these plants in large plantations in Uzbekistan in the future.
Seeds of Senna obtusifolia (L.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby, after being sown in small-sized containers, sprouted in 5-6 days, and the cotyledon leaves remained on the stem for 60-65 days. The stages of flowering, fruiting, and vegetation for Senna obtusifolia were as follows: bud formation took 45-50 days, flowering 50-55 days, fruiting 60-65 days, and the overall vegetation period was 120-125 days. The flowers opened in the first half of the day (around 10:00 AM). The average yield of dry raw material was 75.82 grams.
Seeds of Ipomoea nil (L.) Roth were sown in the experimental plots during the first ten days of April. During the generative phase, the following biometric parameters were recorded: plant height 2.95 ± 0.22 m, length of generative stems 2.62 ± 0.24 m, number of leaves 46.5 ± 3.59, leaf length 10.11 ± 0.49 cm, root length 19.85 ± 0.88 cm, number of flowers 42.8 ± 2.37, and flower diameter 4.82 ± 0.28 cm. Each fruit contained 10.8 ± 0.44 seeds. Based on the obtained results, it has been proven that Ipomoea nil can be propagated under open-field conditions.
Additionally, a pharmaceutical garden was established in the experimental plot for medicinal plants used to treat respiratory diseases. Furthermore, during scientific expeditions, seed materials of certain medicinal plants were collected to enrich the medicinal plant collection with new species growing in Uzbekistan. The results obtained open the possibility of enriching the country's collection of valuable medicinal and edible plant species that are in demand by interested individuals and organizations in the Republic.
